UMKC Campus Recreation, Student Affairs

The Assistant Director will work with the Director to uphold the mission for Campus Recreation and its role within the Division of Student Affairs to support UMKC students. This position will oversee daily operations of Swinney Center and ensure that programs and services for Campus Recreation are operating safely and efficiently. This position will supervise, mentor, and evaluate full-time professionals and a graduate assistant. They will also lead Student Development for Campus Recreation and continue to build a successful student employment program.

Primary Responsibilities

• Assist with the financial and strategic vision by preparing and implementing short and long-term departmental goals
• Assist with the vision and implementation of a comprehensive student development model for the department
  • Maintain student development initiatives, including department-wide new hire orientation, supporting program managers in monthly student staff training topics, semesterly evaluations, GROW conversations, and employee offboarding
  • Plan and implement a Fall and Spring all-staff training
  • Align the department with best practices in student employment using various resources such as NIRSA, NASPA, and NACE
  • Complete yearly assessment to understand the impact of the student development program on student success
• Develop and maintain an operational and compensation budget for program areas
• Manage facility rental contracts for the department
• Provide benchmark statistics, analysis, and reporting on Campus Recreation programs, facilities, and services to help the department make data-informed decisions.
• Assist with developing and enforcing policies and procedures to maintain efficient operations of Campus Recreation facilities
• Establish and implement program area-specific risk management practices, policies, and procedures
• Maintain Fusion Innosoft to ensure efficient facility operation processes and user-friendly membership experiences
• Work with Campus Facilities Management for facilities-related maintenance
• Other duties as assigned

Supervising Responsibilities

• Responsible for supervising facilities student employees, including facility attendants and building supervisors
  • Hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, and evaluation
  • Includes monthly required training for building supervisors and facility attendants (August – April)
• Directly supervise the Membership Graduate Assistant
  • Assist with membership sales processes and training plans for membership desk attendants
  • Execute routine tasks for payroll deduct memberships and parking pass purchases
• Directly supervise the Operations & Events Coordinator
  • Support Coordinator in the management of facility events and tracking revenue generation
  • Assist in the management of the Service Center, lost and found, and locker rental program
• Directly supervise the Sr. Coordinator of Aquatics & Safety
  • Assist in strategies to recruit and retain lifeguard staff
  • Work collaboratively with the Sr. Coordinator and Director to maintain the aquatic center facility and plan for deferred maintenance
  • Support Sr. Coordinator in managing pool rentals and tracking revenue generation

A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

• Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration or Recreation and Sport Management
• Experience supervising a team
• Knowledge of Student Development Theory
• Knowledge of Fusion InnoSoft and Connect2 software systems
• Experience in facility operations
• Must have a strong understanding of customer service and building relationships
• Engagement in NIRSA
• CPR, AED, First Aid Certifications

Full time, benefit eligible

$55,208 – $57,000 commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity.

Work schedule will primarily be Monday – Friday; 8am – 5pm. May include some nights and weekend work requirements.
