Position description:
Full time instructor-level position at The Raptor Center (TRC), University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. This is a 12-month contract appointment, annually renewable based on performance and funding availability, and is dependent upon the successful completion of a background check. This position reports to the VPM dept chair with day to day oversight of all work activities by the Executive Director of The Raptor Center.
Job duties:
Clinical teaching and supervision (50%)
Primary supervisor of TRC clinical interns and secondary mentor to TRC resident
Oversee veterinary externship program and in-house student rotations
Teach in UMN CVM clinical courses taught out of TRC
Act as the point person for visiting scholars and professionals spending time in TRC hospital
Help cover on-call hours for backup veterinary support for the interns.
Clinical services (30%)
Assist with providing medical care for captive raptors and wild rehabilitation patients. This includes education birds from TRC, local nature centers, and falconry birds. Includes preventive medicine visits and urgent or emergent medical care.
Assist with remote consultations.
Work with Clinic Manager to ensure optimization of clinical services including systems involving both students and veterinary support staff
Outreach (15%)
Represent TRC at professional conferences and courses
Provide content for public outreach and engagement through media including social media platforms, newsletters, and twice yearly Raptor Release publications.
Create and give talks as requested at public events for outreach and engagement
Research (5%)
Contribute to data collection for TRC and partner research projects
Mentor students as they look at research questions
Required qualifications:
DVM and completion of a formal post graduate training program in raptor medicine and surgery (internship or residency)
MN Veterinary Licensure
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, willingness to give verbal presentations to large groups
Experience and enthusiasm for mentoring veterinary and post-graduate students
Demonstrated interpersonal skills
Preferred qualifications:
Wildlife rehabilitation experience
Completion of formal postgraduate clinical training programs
Research experience
Public presentation skills and experience
USDA accreditation (Category I and II)
