Position description
The Group in Buddhist Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, invites application of a pool of qualified temporary, non-tenure track lecturers, to teach one course in Pali Language and canonical and commentarial genres. The course is designed to introduce Pali grammar, paleography, and basic canonical and commentarial genres for those with previous training in Sanskrit. The course meets Wednesdays 3-6 pm.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): teaching, holding office hours, assigning grades, preparing course materials, maintaining a course website and compiling teaching materials and interacting with students via email and/bCourses, and Zoom instructional software.

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, lecturers should be prepared to implement hybrid and/or flexible modes of instruction depending upon public health conditions. Remote instruction may be synchronous, asynchronous, or a combination of both. Instructors must have internet access and be prepared to adjust pedagogical approaches with a remote setting and use new teaching tools.
Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Advanced degree or enrolled in an advanced degree program.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
Advanced degree. For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.
Preferred qualifications
Advanced degree in Pali and Sanskrit language; expertise in Pali canonical and extra-canonical literature; expertise in classical Buddhist history and thought.
