DESCRIPTION
Applies professional UC Academic HR concepts, organization and / or system wide policies, and procedures to provide guidance to supervisors and managers to resolve a variety of academic human resources issues of moderate scope and complexity.
As a member of the Academic Personnel (AP) team/unit, serves as advisor to the Chair, Vice Chair and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) Department for all matters pertaining to academic personnel in a deadline driven environment where extreme attention to detail is necessary. Manages and coordinates academic personnel services, including appointments, reappointments and personnel actions, leaves, salary administration, benefits, promotions, merits, advancements, retirements, etc. In collaboration with Senior AP Analyst, coordinates and processes faculty recruitments. Prepares appointment files and takes a lead role in managing the logistics of faculty candidate visits.
QUALIFICATIONS
Basic knowledge of and ability to apply / interpret organization and college policies and procedures which govern academic HR. Knowledge of regulations, policies and procedures including academic affirmative action, submission of appointment, merit, promotion, re-appointment and termination of files.
Knowledge of organization, college and departmental formal and informal policies and procedures and understanding of variances to stated policies. Ability to interpret union agreements as well as contract negotiations, and to implement wage agreement components. Ability to communicate these issues to management and employees as required.
Knowledge of human resources management systems and other related business software programs and systems. Experience with on-line payroll/HR systems and ability to use data processing software and relational database systems to process various personnel actions.
Ability to prioritize and meet tight deadlines in a high volume academic department. Ability to manage academic personnel deadlines, including ability to coordinate, guide and orchestrate academic personnel at all levels in a fashion that insures faculty confidence thereby providing for a smooth process.
Analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations to Chairs / unit management. Demonstrated analytical skills including the ability to read, understand and interpret complex materials and documents. Ability to summarize information and extract and emphasize the most critical and relevant aspects.
Strong organization, problem solving, and communication skills. Effective interpersonal and communication skills with ability to communicate verbally and in writing to a wide range of audiences. Excellent writing skills to formulate and present written material in a logical and comprehensive fashion. Ability to work successfully under pressure.
Proven skill to successfully perform highly detailed work.
Knowledge of unit academic culture and educational goals of discipline(s) served.
Knowledge of University procedures and regulations concerning academic personnel practices and policies including salary scales, merit cycles, range adjustments, leave accrual benefits, policies on benefits and payroll. Ability to interpret policies for employees.
Skill and experience to use and maintain a computerized system. Familiarity with Macintosh computer systems and related software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, and UCSD systems).
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $48,900 – $102,300 Annually
The University of California, San Diego is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Expected Pay Scale. Placement within the Expected Pay Scale is determined by internal equity, relevant qualifications, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
