Tesla is looking for an experienced leader to drive all phases of the site design process for new Supercharger sites. The Design Lead has a broad list of responsibilities, expected to do everything from team performance management, to optimizing individual charging site designs for cost and customer experience, to market-level policy development with cities and utilities. The Design Lead reports to the Regional Manager.
The Design Lead is directly responsible for managing a team of highly skilled Design Managers, who are responsible for the maturation of individual charging projects from concept to ready-for-construction stage. This process includes the production of construction drawings, leading and supporting the permitting process and working with the utility to obtain a new interconnection design and easement. The Design Lead will be responsible for their team’s performance, measured in the quality and quantity of charging sites that are ready to be constructed by the Construction Team, project timelines and resource efficiency.
This position requires a high-energy, highly motivated leader with a passion for design, a drive to innovate, and the ability to work well in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. The ideal candidate has proven experience managing teams, managing the realization of infrastructure projects, demonstrates clear-headed problem solving, and has the skills to work collaboratively with internal business units and external vendors and stakeholders.
What You’ll Do
* Manage a team of highly skilled Design Managers to drive high performance execution of the Design program, measured in the ability to deliver a ton of amazing charging project designs for construction. Foster a culture of innovation and creativity within the Design team
* Talent development, performance management, as well as hiring, onboarding and developing new talent
* Design your own sites to support program execution, and to identify areas of improvement for the program.
* Regional subject matter expert for technical design aspects of projects. Provide the team with region specific design solutions to optimize the design process for customer experience, speed of execution, and cost reduction.
* Spearhead innovation in product and project design. Pilot different products, design approaches, and processes that can lead to design efficiencies and cost optimization. Ensure feedback from Design Managers on site design aspects gets incorporated into future sites
* Collaborate with program design leadership to adopt and incorporate national design initiatives and goals into regional project pipeline, scope and goals. .
* Work with internal stakeholders to maximize team performance. Collaborate with the Development Lead and Construction Lead to ensure a continuous flow of new projects. Allocate design resources to optimize efficiency of project pipeline execution. Work with Regional Manager to anticipate and address future needs
* Enable program acceleration by developing effective relationships with regional and local utilities and permitting authorities. Drive process improvements and tackle regulatory roadblocks
What You’ll Bring
* 10+ years in architectural and engineering design, construction, project management, program management, or infrastructure rollouts
* 5+ years in a leadership role. Ability to manage teams of highly productive, highly skilled executers, strategically employing their skills to best fit the goals of region
* Highly structured with superb organizational skills and strong multi-tasking abilities. Ability to manage on a project-by-project level while having market-level vision and corresponding strategic execution
* Experience in working with utilities to obtain new interconnections required
* Experience in working with regulatory entities to obtain planning approvals and building & electrical permits required
* Proven ability to scale programs. Relentless focus on program execution and innovation, with a data-driven approach
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal: strategic listener, conscious conversationalist, and the ability to persuade and impact people from a wide range of roles and backgrounds
* Ability to travel 25% of time
