Position Summary:
The Chief Engineer is responsible for the innovation and design integrity of new ammunition products. Responsibilities also include providing technical leadership, mentoring, and coaching to R&D Team Leads, Design Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, Production personnel, and Marketing. This is a senior position in the R&D Department generally intended for mechanical engineers with at least a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), significant work experience in the small caliber ammunition or medium caliber ordnance industry, and very strong analytical skills. The Chief Engineer must have an expert level knowledge of military ammunition and firearm products, their applications, and technologies, and will spearhead research in the R&D Department. A Chief Engineer works both independently and with teams of Designers, Design Engineers, Team Leads, Project Engineers, and Test Technicians. Additionally, a Chief Engineer is an active member of the R&D Management Team. A Chief Engineer initiates interaction with the entire engineering organization, as well as collaborates with other departments.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
*Technical Leadership within the SIG New Product Introduction processes, product platform, and system design.Â
*Provide technical training, mentoring, and coaching to Team Leads, Engineers, Designers & Technicians.
*Actively contribute to and guide the development of multiple R&D development programs, ensuring that product requirements are met with robust design, and cost-effective designs.
*Responsible for product TDP and ensuring functional dimensioning schemes, appropriate GD&T, appropriate QAP identification, and ASME Y14.5 compliance at the expert level as required.
*Responsible for tolerance stack analyses that ensure design functionality.
*Responsible for energetics materials processing and testing in general.
*Provide guidance for metal parts fabrication and assembly in the ammunition processes (shellcases, projectiles, primers).
*Responsible for the accuracy of R&D engineering analyses, providing support and guidance to Design Engineers as needed.
*Process all levels of change orders through the PLM system. Â
*Responsible for the accuracy of assemblies and BOMs.
*Oversight of R&D projects meeting validation test criteria.Â
*Responsible for training Engineers in best design practice and identification of the root cause of technical performance problems.
*Responsible for ensuring products are designed with consideration for ease of manufacturing and inspection and that product cost meets plan. Â
*Review the acceptability of part non-conformances, providing feedback to suppliers and Quality. Â
*Approve or reject waivers and deviations.
*Supports proposals, white papers, and communicates technical information to customers and executive management.
*Provide technical assistance to other departments within SIG SAUER as needed.
*Consistently follow safe firearm handling practices. Â
*Follow all range safety procedures when in any of the range areas.
*Drive Continuous Improvement in technical information to evaluate and support product design efforts.Â
*Engages in and actively volunteers for Continuous Improvement projects/tasks.
*Participates in and sustains 5S Standards.
*Must follow all required Safety and ISO procedures.
*Must be able to travel infrequently.
