About the role
Shopify is looking for a Tax Analyst / Senior Tax Analyst to join its Indirect Tax Team. The role will support indirect tax compliance, research, planning, audits and controversy. The position will report to the Manager of Indirect Tax and will provide support to the whole Indirect Tax Team.

Responsibilities:
Assist with indirect tax compliance, including preparation and review of sales/use, GST and VAT returns.
Help with indirect tax inquiries and/or audits, including data collection and analysis, gathering documentation and investigating issues.
Prepare monthly GL account reconciliations and related journal entries for indirect tax accounts.
Support the preparation of indirect tax accruals for essential accounts for SOX control purposes.
Assist in the preparation of indirect tax registration filings to ensure Shopify is compliant with all state and local sales tax registration requirements.
Conduct indirect tax research for new business initiatives and projects.
Partner with members of other teams to provide analysis on a variety of indirect tax questions from the business.
Conduct indirect tax research regarding new tax laws, tax law changes, and compliance.
Assist with the development, documentation, and implementation of procedures and policies pertaining to indirect tax.
Help develop solutions for indirect tax automation identifying technology tools and processes that can help reduce manual work and create efficiencies in the compliance process.
Collaborate with Accounting, Legal, Treasury, and other cross functional groups to ensure accuracy and consistency in reporting across functions.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in Tax, Accountancy, Finance, Business or Law.
A minimum of 2 years (Analyst) or 4 years (Sr. Analyst) of indirect tax related experience, at a Big 4 firm, industry and/or state department of taxation.
Strong tax technical knowledge of United States sales/use tax policies & legislation.
Experience with rules and processes for reporting and filing United States sales/use returns.
Experience with account reconciliation, troubleshooting reconciliation differences, and JE review/approval.
Ability to collaborate remotely with a cross functional global team.
Ability & desire to work in a fast paced & dynamic global environment.
Critical thinking and a high degree of enthusiasm with the ability to analyze large amounts of data.
Bonus experience:
Working knowledge of indirect taxes outside of the United States.
Exposure to Avalara or other tax calculation engines, Netsuite, Alteryx (or other similar tools used for business analytics/reporting).
Familiarity with e-commerce sales taxation trends around the world.
