The Family Court of St. Louis County is hiring for a Detention Supervisor within our 24-hour Detention Center. This is a non-merit position.
Salary: Range 113 ($52,832 – $62,400) This position is eligible for 10% addition to pay. This position is eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
Hours: To be determined (On Call 24/7)
An employee in this job class and position performs work of considerable difficulty requiring significant independent judgment in supervising a shift of Detention Deputy Juvenile Officers assigned to detention residential units and the front desk control area. Work is performed under the general direction of the Detention Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent. Work is reviewed through supervisory conferences and reports.
This job class title is considered an essential position for coverage purposes. An employee who is indispensable to the emergency service function of his or her employing agency or department and is required to assist the department or agency in meeting policy requirements and/or its operational needs. Position subject to mandatory overtime based on the needs of the facility.
Serves as the immediate shift supervisor for the Detention Center, responsible for the security of the Detention Center and general welfare of the staff and residents during the assigned shift.
Provides general supervision and guidance to Detention Deputy Juvenile Officer staff assigned to residential units and the front desk control area; provides direct supervision during the initial probationary period; plans, assigns, and reviews work of staff; consults with staff regarding work activities and Detention Center issues; offers continuous feedback to staff concerning their performance through regular supervisory conferences, coaching/counseling sessions, etc.; prepares performance appraisals; recommends staff to the Superintendent for personnel actions such as merit increases, progressive disciplinary action as necessary, etc.
Conducts regular unit meetings to discuss resident issues, facilitate dialogue between unit staff, communicate Court wide and Detention Center policies and procedures, and discuss other issues of concern to unit members.
Acts as Court liaison with police requesting judicial authorization for special activities.
Consults with, and advises, the police, other agency personnel, clients and the community regarding Detention Center policies, procedures, and general Court procedures as needed.
Maintains all established Detention Center official records.
Enforces safety procedures and practices.
Adheres to detention and other policies and approved MO detention standards. This position is considered part of essential staffing and schedule changes without notice may occur.
Examples of Other Duties:
Arranges transportation of residents to other facilities (e.g. St. Louis City Detention Center, hospital etc.) as needed when the Family Court Security Officers are unavailable or after hours.
Review of detention incident reports and appropriate consequences.
Writes and reviews incident reports.
Serves as back-up to Detention Deputy Juvenile Officer staff as needed.
Attends Detention Supervisors’ meetings; participates on Family Court committees and task forces as requested.
Stays abreast of current issues and trends in juvenile detention issues by attending training, reading publications, participating in professional organizations, etc.; communicates this information to staff and other Detention Supervisors.
Other related duties as assigned.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in social work (MSW) or a related social/behavioral science (highly preferred), plus at least four years of professional social work experience working with adolescents and/or families; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
All applicants conditionally offered a permanent part-time, full-time, term or on-call position will be required to submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be paid by the County. Applicants will also be required to submit to an extensive background and criminal record check.
