Overview:
As a Research Systems and Storage Specialist you’ll work alongside senior members of the team to maintain and advance the hardware and system software of the University’s centralized storage service, TigerData, and other centralized high-performance computing systems used for research. In this role, you will also collaborate with other technology colleagues across the organization to ensure that the high-performance computing infrastructure operates at proper service levels. Working with team members, you will learn the skills to support the research computing systems, including installing, administering, and monitoring these systems, as well as assisting end-users with system software, data, and job submissions. The position also requires that you work closely with colleagues in OIT, the Library, the Office of the Dean for Research, as well as technical staff in University departments to provide timely support for long term data storage and retrieval for research computing. The individual in the position works with senior team members, on teams, as well as independently with only general supervision.

The Research Computing department at Princeton University is seeking a talented and enthusiastic team member to join their data management and storage team.

Responsibilities:
- Assist the data management and storage team with storage system and backups for all machines managed by Research Computing
- Help monitor and resolve issues related to storage use
- Monitor and address storage quota issues
- Monitor and administer the backup process for IBM SpectrumScale (GPFS) systems and partner with team members to resolve any issues
- Assist with the administration of TIGRESS HPC systems
- Work with team members to install servers, storage and data communication systems within established service levels
- Replace failing disks, memory or other compute sub-systems
- Mount and dismount removable media
- Perform onsite server/hardware software tasks, as requested
- Under general supervision, provide installation services and related operational duties supporting research and enterprise computing within established service levels
- When provided access to personal, proprietary and/or otherwise confidential data, maintain such data in the strictest confidence and follow procedures to ensure the privacy, security and proper use of data.
Qualifications:
Essential Qualifications
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience working in an IT role that includes supporting computer hardware
- Experience with the usage and behavior of common operating systems and desktop software (Microsoft Windows, Linux, etc.)
- Experience with server/compute hardware maintenance tasks, such as replacing disk drives and memory cards
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Ability to work on collaborative teams as well as independently
- Strong focus on customer service, responds promptly and professionally to customer requests
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse customer base having varied levels of technical proficiencies
- Proactively seeks information and ideas from peers, supervisors, and members of the Princeton community
- Ability to handle multiple priorities
- Enthusiasm for learning new related technologies and developing existing knowledge and skill set
- Education: Associate’s degree, or equivalent IT work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with specific technologies:
- Dell servers and storage hardware
- IBM storage hardware
- Aruba network infrastructure
- Experience working in higher education
