PeopleStrategy is seeking a Manager, Tax who is a Subject Matter Expert on federal, state, and local payroll tax and reporting. They manage a team of Tax Analysts responsible for handling federal, state, and local payroll tax compliance, preparing various payroll tax payments and returns and working directly with clients to resolve tax-related issues.
Manager, Tax Responsibilities:
Mentor, coach, and train Tax Analysts to grow and increase their knowledge base related to all facets of their jobs, including (but not limited to): company culture, policies and procedures, jurisdictional requirements, systems, and techniques
Develop and maintain adequate internal controls to protect company assets and ensure data integrity
Document department processes and updates internal resources as needed
Oversee all facets of multi-state payroll tax payment processing, tax return preparation, and payroll tax reporting
Monitor tax phone queue to ensure team calls from clients regarding their company payroll and tax information
Oversee tax operations when filing monthly, quarterly, annual returns for all taxing authorities on time
Handle escalated tax notices and discrepancies by analyzing information and processing corrections
Responsible for payroll tax reconciliation for clients during tax implementation and conversion process
Oversee the tax amendment process to ensure payroll tax returns are filed accurately
Oversee tax system maintenance by adding and/or updating client tax profiles with new tax jurisdictions, payment frequencies, and unemployment rates
Monitor the tax team’s workload using dashboards, reports, and other tools to ensure team SLAs are met
Act as an ambassador of the department and champion product updates that affect tax processing
Responsible for providing evidence to support annual SOC 1 Type 2 relating to tax procedures
Requirements:
Manager, Tax Qualifications:
Previous Management experience in payroll and/or payroll tax
Must be comfortable engaging with associates at all levels of the organization and at times with external parties (such as regulators, auditors, etc.)
Must have excellent time management skills, including attention to detail and the ability to organize, manage, and complete tasks with competing priorities
Must be results-oriented and able to handle multiple projects or tasks in a timely and effective manner in a fast-paced environment
Proficiency with MS Office applications (Excel, Outlook, Word, Teams, etc.) is required
Previous payroll service provider and call center environment experience is preferred
5+ years’ experience in multi-state payroll support, specialist, or payroll tax analyst role
Critical thinker with a focus on using independent judgment to make decisions without immediate direction
Experienced in payroll withholding taxation and related reporting requirements
Experienced in communicating with government tax agencies regarding inquiries, notices, abatements, refunds, etc.
MasterTax software or other tax system experience desired
Fundamental Payroll Certified (FPC) or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred
