Orchid Orthopedics Looking for Tax Manager, Orchid Corporate at Mason, MI Full Time

SUMMARY OF POSITION

This position is the single internal tax resource at Orchid and it does not currently have any direct reports, although it may in the future. It is a comprehensive tax position focusing on tax provisions, tax compliance (returns), maintaining of the tax calendar, as well as value-added projects. This position requires a high attention to detail with a focus on accuracy, but the person must also possess the ability to take a step back and perform an analytical review in order to spot obvious errors and omissions. While the main responsibilities for the role are technical and compliance in nature, the Tax Manager will need the ability to stay current on Orchid’s underlying business performance to ensure they are making tax decisions which are relevant to the Company.
The Tax Manager reports to the Director, Global Financial Reporting & Principal Accounting Officer, Orchid Corporate. We are looking for a very proactive resource who will ask questions, learn the business and ensure compliance with tax rules and regulations.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prepare the annual tax provision for the consolidated Orchid group under US GAAP, including the foreign components in the UK and Switzerland
• Prepare the annual foreign tax provisions on a stand-alone basis for the UK and Switzerland entities under IFRS and Swiss GAAP, which are integral to the local foreign statutory financial statement process
• Manage the completion of all tax compliance (returns) filings, including the federal and state returns in the US, with the assistance of our Big 4 tax advisors. This also includes managing the Big 4 tax teams in the UK and Switzerland to ensure tax compliance (returns) in those jurisdictions.
• Own the tax calendar and ensure compliance, which includes staying current with all the annual reports, state fees owed, sale & use tax returns, personal property tax returns, etc.
• Calculate reasonable quarterly tax payment estimates for all Orchid entities as needed
• Be an active manager of the tax services received from the Big 4 firm, including ensuring that firm keeps their costs down, while providing Orchid with expert tax service and advice.
• Develop a solid working relationship with the Big 4 tax team, especially the lead Senior Manager and Partner, in order to be able to pick up the phone and have proactive conversations about current issues or potential transactions
• From a technical standpoint, the Tax Manager needs to have a basic understanding of US GAAP purchase accounting (basic, not expert), in order to be able to establish accurate opening balance sheet deferred tax assets and liabilities as needed from M&A transactions
• A successful candidate will have a solid understanding of the 2017 – 2018 US Tax Reform Act, including topics such as:
  • Interest expense limitations
  • New NOL usage limitations on current income
  • GILTI
  • BEAT and other topics
• Understand the basics of transfer pricing risk and work with other tax service providers on transfer pricing studies as needed.
• An important part of this role, albeit somewhat subjective, is to be able to take Orchid’s internal 3- year financial forecast, and turn that into a tax forecast in order to estimate cash tax payments that may be required.
• Lead Orchid’s first ever US R&D credit study, with the assistance of a Big 4 accounting firm, looking back 10 years, in order to realize a significant tax credit for Orchid
• The tax manager needs to be comfortable reaching out to state and local governments, or other business economic development groups, in order to identify opportunities for grants and incentives
• Take care of ad hoc requests that flow up from the Orchid businesses for W-9’s, sales & use tax exemption certificates and other similar items
• Currently would have a hybrid schedule working between home and office and we would expect that to continue into the future, although working in the office full time is also an option if the candidate prefers

WORK EXPERIENCE

• Minimum of 6-8 years of combined tax experience between public accounting and company / industry tax experience (Minimum Required)
• Strong preference for someone who has had at least 3-4 years of tax experience at a public accounting firm, prior to gaining company / industry experience, however extensive company / industry only experience will be considered (Preferred)
• The preferred candidate would be someone who is at a Tax Manager level currently, but has the ability and desire to potentially step up into a Tax Director role 2-3 years in the future (Preferred)
• Someone with an aptitude for ensuring compliance, while at the same time having the ability to see where a growing company is headed and being able to plan ahead as needed to minimize risk. (Preferred)
• Candidate should be intellectually curious and have a continuous improvement mentality (Minimum Required)
• Strong preference for someone who is a licensed CPA and stays current with the annual 40-hour CPE requirement

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Understanding of the necessity and value of accuracy and attention to detail; ability to process information with high levels of accuracy, while also being able to take a step back in order to perform an analytical review to spot unusual activity, errors and/or omissions
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment, juggling multiple priorities and projects effectively
• Ability to apply logic and reasoning to solve problems,
• Ability to work in a corporate headquarters setting (audience), as well as being able to effectively work with local manufacturing plant personnel as needed (aka: know your audience and adapt)
• Understanding of effective communication concepts, including when to escalate questions and/or potential issues to the Director, Global Financial Reporting & Principal Accounting Officer
• Partner effectively with other Corporate finance team members, including the Manager of Financial Reporting (Technical Accounting), the US Corporate Treasury / Shared Service team manager and the Senior Manager of US Financial Reporting
• Play a major role in owning the tax areas of the annual external financial audit w/Orchid’s Big 4 audit firm, in order to ensure timely completion of the audit, with minimal tax issues noted
• Provides ad hoc tax analysis as required
• Ad hoc projects and responsibilities as needed, including supporting M&A transactions

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

• Bachelor degree in accounting (or other relevant field/degree) is required, while being a licensed CPA is a strong preference
