Job Goal:
The role of the special education teacher is to design and provide specialized instruction in academic curricula, social competence and independence. Teachers work collaboratively with the educational team, including parents, in developing quality individualized educational plans and implementing the IEP. Duties include collecting, maintaining and analyzing student performance data in order to drive instruction; understanding and meeting other student needs derived from medical, physical, behavioral, social or emotional conditions within the school environment; coaching and supervising classroom teacher assistants.
General Responsibilities:
The person hired in the area of teaching the severely emotionally impaired will operate as a classroom teacher in a Center SEI setting. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
1.Conduct a classroom program for the severely emotionally impaired which will
include the following minimum curriculum: basic academic skills, prevocational
and vocational skill development, and personal adjustment/pro social skills.
2.Design, implementation, and follow up of a classroom behavior management
system which will include daily documentation of student’s behavior,
parent/guardian will be notified of student’s progress weekly via U.S. mail.
3.Assist in the implementation of the Outdoor Education curriculum as an on-going
component of the total EI program.
4.Participate in regular physical management training sessions.
5.Development and implementation of goals and objectives in accordance with
Special Education rules and regulations.
6.Provide communications with local school districts treatment facilities to facilitate
curriculum coordination and credit status.
7.Assist in the transition for students returning to local schools.
8.Provide consultation with parents, ISD staff, local schools, and administration.
9.Supervise, evaluate and direct teacher assistant assigned to program.
10.Plan and conduct IEPC’s when appropriate.
11.Assist students in transition to mainstreamed courses.
12.Set-up and maintain budget for classroom/staff functions; ex., conferences, activity,
classroom supplies.
13.Conduct a classroom program that includes the basic requirements necessary to
graduate on a regular or special education diploma track.
14.Supervise student teachers when appropriate.
15.All other duties assigned by Service Area Supervisor and/or Assistant
Superintendent for Special Education.

8.Remain up-to-date on current methodologies and strategies for instructional
programs for students with disabilities.
9.Utilize existing and evolving technologies appropriately and ethically in compliance
with the North Ed computer use policy.
10.Identify and work to prevent bias, prejudice, discrimination and oppression that
interfere with individual rights in the educational process.
