Position Purpose
We are looking to fill several Electrical Engineer Internships for the Summer 2023. Positions may be located in Louisville, Lexington, or Elizabethtown.
Gain experience and exposure to practical engineering applications within the utility industry. Individual normally works under close supervision; performs a variety of projects that have specific instructions and expected results.
Seeking Electrical Engineering majors only to work Full Time (40 hours) during the Summer. Must be currently enrolled in school full-time, pursuing a bachelor’s degree.

Job Description
Protection and Control Engineering: Co-op will work with computer modeling software for used for system protection. Will help with coordination studies for distribution equipment. Support operating and maintenance functions with fault studies and engineering analysis. Analyze relay settings and ensure consistent data is being entered into the database.
Substation Construction and Maintenance: Co-op will learn Distribution Equipment Tracking System and conduct field/shop inspections to research and verify information. Also receive in-depth training and experience with computer-aided drafting system to make corrections and edits to switching diagrams for substations and become familiar with power transmission and distribution systems. Gain hands-on experience with substation maintenance and control and relay testing.
Operations Center Distribution Engineering: Co-op will be immersed in increasing levels of responsibility regards the design, construction, maintenance, and protection of the electrical distribution system; this will include hands-on opportunities to learn theories on overhead and underground systems, overcurrent protection, line capacitor installation, and other power quality and electrical service initiatives. Co-op will split time between fieldwork and computer applications.
Transmission Protection and Controls: Co-op will assist engineers with protection event analysis and review, short circuit model maintenance, protection system equipment data maintenance, protection system design and implementation, and/or protection system construction project management. Assignments may include data entry and analysis, print review and management, and/or equipment purchasing tracking. The co-op may also have opportunities to visit and/or work within Transmission Substations and their associated Control House. Upon completion, the co-op will obtain skills and knowledge of how Transmission Protection Systems operate and how the records are maintained in order to install and maintain these systems.
Identifies opportunities for improvement and/or suggests improved methods.
Gathers, correlates, and analyzes specific data using established procedures.
Performs detailed and/or routine engineering assignments involving established calculations, tests and analysis.
Performs a variety of routine tasks that will improve the individual’s familiarization with the engineering methods, practices, and programs of the Company.
Supports operating and maintenance functions with engineering analysis, troubleshooting, problem identification, problem resolution activities.
Assists Senior Engineers and/or Engineer I, II and III with large projects, as needed.
Assists with the development of station/engineering goals, objectives, budgets, programs and procedures.
Plans and controls all activities so as to provide an accident-free work place.
Conducts work activities with regard to environmental rules and regulations.
Regularly reviews assignments to assure optimum efficiency and cost effectiveness.
Performs other duties as directed by management.
