Job Summary:
The Patient Care Assistant Extern (PCAE) is accountable for supporting patient care activities, under the supervision of a registered nurse, on inpatient nursing units. The PCAE works closely with the charge nurse and staff nurses to assure patient care needs are met. The PCAE performs patient care activities, as delegated, and adheres to patient safety measures. The PCAE is competent in the performance of basic patient care activities, medical terminology, communication, organizational, and computer skills. The PCAE demonstrates personal and professional effectiveness. The externship will last a total of 10 weeks.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High School Diploma or GED – Preferred
Nurse Aide/Medical Assistant Program – Must be enrolled or have successfully completed a state-approved nurse aide program or a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited medical assistant training program
License & Certification:
Certified Nurse Assistant/Medical Assistant – Ability to meet all eligibility requirements to take the CNA/MA certification exam by the completion of the 8 week externship program.
Basic Life Support from a hospital-based American Heart Association (AHA) or Red Cross approved program completed by the end of the 10 week externship,

Language:
Spanish (preferred), bilingual skills (preferred)
Communication Skills:
Above Average Verbal Communication (Heavy Public Contact)
Proficiencies:
MS Word (novice) P.C. (novice), Typing
