The Design-Build Engineering Manager will be responsible for forming, leading, mentoring, guiding, integrating, coordinating, and managing the entire engineering team performing design and construction-phase engineering services for Water and Wastewater treatment plant, pipeline, and infrastructure projects in the U.S. executed via design-build delivery.
For the first 18+ months, this professional will be dedicated the Memphis Sewer Assessment and Rehabilitation Program. It is preferred for this professional to be located in the Memphis project office for the duration of that project, but remote work form another B&V office, or the professional’s home office will be considered with 10-25% time travel to the project site.
The position is responsible for ensuring the engineering design that the team delivers meets project requirements, industry standard of care, and Company requirements and governance. These project teams typically include civil, civil-mechanical, structural, architectural, building-mechanical, process-mechanical, electrical, instrumentation & control, and process engineers; as well as, CAD, BIM, and Civil 3D technicians.
The Engineering Manager is responsible for the delivering the project to the established scope, schedule, and budget. The Engineering Manager is often responsible for developing the engineering scope, schedule, and budget. The Engineering Manager will work extensively with the project delivery and estimating teams to develop construction costs and schedule. The Engineering Manager is typically the client-facing representative for the engineering team.
Project involvement will often include developing designs and content for project pursuits; participating in bidding and estimating efforts; participating in proprietary meetings and selection interviews; planning, conceptual design, preliminary design, and detailed design; and engineering services during construction, commissioning, and operation. The Engineering Manager usually stays with a project from the proposal phase through commissioning. Most projects are large $50+ million-dollar facilities which can take from 4 to 5 years from proposal to commissioning. Typically, an Engineering Manager will be responsible directly for one, or more, project(s). The Engineering Manager will also get involved in various pursuits and issues on other projects throughout the year.
Black & Veatch performs as a matrix organization, where project teams may have engineers located in multiple offices across the globe. This will frequently involve coordinating the work of engineers who are located at the regional office servicing the project, or other offices outside of where the Design-Build Engineering Manager is located. Travel to attend meetings and site visits will be a required function of the position.
