As a lab technician, you will be responsible for preparing, testing, and reporting data for laboratory samples of asphalt, cement, asphalt emulsions, aggregates, and asphalt mixtures as well as being responsible for following current EH&S and operational practices. The Lab Technician will work closely with the laboratory personnel to prepare and test products to meet the needs to each project, internally and externally.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintain a safe work environment and ensure all EH&S training is followed.
• Become proficient in aggregate processing, batching, and mixture testing.
• Become proficient in asphalt and asphalt emulsion testing.
• Support material receiving and warehouse staging functions.
• Support sample shipping and raw material inventory.
• Become proficient in processing road cores.
• Execute calibration and preventive maintenance program tasks for assigned equipment to ensure 100% readiness.
• Active involvement in AASHTO Accreditation activities.
• Manage your daily work assignments and maintain accurate records. Communicate results by assigned deadlines.
• Build a basic knowledge of Road Science products and where they are typically used.
• Cross train in other functional design areas to support the Road Science business.
• Provide annual and intermediate term goals, aligning with priorities established by upper management.
• Perform daily lab clean up and prepare work the next day’s task.
• Limited travel, as necessary.
• Other duties, as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements:

• High School diploma, required. Technical Associate’s degree in a science or engineering related discipline, is a plus.
• 1 to 3 years’ experience in asphalt related formulation, testing, and lab operations a plus.

Skills and Competencies:

• Strong ability to learn laboratory safety policies and procedures, chemical hazards, and other precautions to promote an effective and safe workplace.
• Working knowledge of asphalt emulsion or asphalt mixtures a plus.
• Ability to understand laboratory equipment and standard operating procedures.
• Understand and follow of applicable AASHTO, ASTM, or State DOT standards and specifications.
• Strong ability to organize and manage daily task.
• Demonstrated computer proficiency including Word, Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Configure, test, calibrate, and maintain liquid asphalt and additive testing equipment.
• Gain field knowledge of asphalt cement and asphalt emulsion production plants.
• Proficient in running laboratory scale emulsion mills and aggregate testing equipment.
• Handling and processing buckets of aggregates or pallets of road cores.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

• Working environment is in a laboratory. The job requires some physical work that can involve routine lifting up to 70lbs, climbing, bending, stooping, crouching and extended time standing.
• Extended time on a computer – repetitive motion.
• Work can include outside time and exposure to the elements.
